Care & Cleaning

LEATHER GUIDES

Leather is a noble and durable material, but it can also be fragile depending on the type of skin and the finish of the leather.

Here are a few tips to maintain your leather products so that they can last long.

CARE & CLEANING

A few basic principles :

‍• Dust your leather items often to prevent the skin from becoming too dry.

• Avoid or limit direct sunlight to avoid color fading.

• Protect your leather before use with appropriate treatments for your specific type of leather.

• Take care of any stain as fast as possible: avoid the absorption and spread of the stain by blotting it without rubbing with a dry white cloth. In some cases, we can use a vinegar and water 1:1 solution. In more serious cases, you need to use special leather cleaning products or even get in contact with some leather specialist.

• Enjoy the leather patina : this is not a mark of stains, just a natural change of your leather over time. It makes your leather unique.‍

Cleaning, maintaining, and protecting Aniline Leather products

‍Aniline leather is full grain leather that is colored all the way through with a transparent dye and without any pigment. It is beautiful, soft and warm but porous and extremely sensitive even if a protective waterproofing treatment has been applied. Due to the limited cleaning options, you have to apply a stain protection treatment. Depending on the type of aniline leather, you can use an Aniline Cream, or a Waterproofing for Leather & Textile treatment. And you need to repeat this prevention treatment every 3 months. In the case of Aniline leather, prevention is the best.

Before protection treatment, clean the area carefully with a mild Leather Cleaner and rub gently. Always work from seam to seam. To nourish old and dry aniline, treat the leather with an Aniline Protector containing oils and UV protection to preserve the leather. If the color of your aniline leather looks faded, use a leather color refresher. You can also use a Leather Cleaning Spirit or a Grease Absorber for more stubborn and oily stains.

If you cannot treat the stains well yourself, please contact a leather specialist.

‍Cleaning and protecting Nubuck & Suede Leathers

‍By nature, Nubuck and Suede leathers are soft and natural but also extremely sensitive. They tend to fade and stains may become very visible. As a prevention, all the surface of your nubuck or suede product should be treated first with an Aniline Protector, and after that, with a waterproofing product for leather. This treatment should be repeated regularly. If you can, clean your product often with a soft brush.

In case there are already some stains, don't use any wet cleaner. It is better to use a Leather Cleaning Pad or a Nubuck eraser. If your piece of leather is removable, you can also use a Leather & Fur Washing kit by hand or in the washing machine. Then don't forget to waterproof your leather again.

If the stain is stubborn, you can use a Leather Cleaning Spirit on a white clean soft cloth without rubbing too hard. Don't forget to let it dry and brush your product again.
If the stain is oily, you can use a Grease Absorber Spray or try to sprinkle cornstarch on the area and cover it with a damp towel. Wait for an hour, dry it with a blow dryer, vacuum up the flour, and brush the area again.
To refresh the color of your leather, you can use a nubuck color refresher. And if you have an ink or a marker stain, use a pen eraser or a dry cleaning pad.
If the damage or stains are too serious, please go to a professional cleaning service or call us for advice.‍

Follow these tips and your product will stay beautiful longer.‍

‍Cleaning and protecting leather car seats

‍Without proper maintenance, leather car seats can become old and dirty. As we know, leather is a natural material and it is subject to fading and cracking. But with heat and UV rays, the risk of damage is higher. Here are a few tips to extend the life of your leather and keep your car looking new:

• Cleaning : Vacuum often to avoid dust and dirt. Then spray a leather cleaner (mild or strong depending on the stain) and use a leather cleaning brush on all sensitive areas where skin or hair comes into contact with the leather. Then, use a clean, dry microfiber towel to wipe away any excess moisture. The seats will remain somewhat damp to the touch unless they have been coated.
Allow 1-24 hours for the seats to dry depending on your climate

• Conditioning : Apply a leather protector generously and evenly. It will keep the leather moist which prevents cracking, while also providing UV protection to maintain the color. After application, allow 4-6 hours for the seats to absorb the conditioner.

• Wipe Dry : Using a clean, dry microfiber towel, wipe off any excess conditioner and then wipe until fully dry.

Complete this routine every 3-6 months and your seats will last longer.

‍Cleaning and protecting leather furniture

‍Most leather furniture is coated with a color pigment and protected with a matte top coat. There are high-quality porous leathers (called aniline or semi-aniline), suede or nubuck, and cheap coated PU leather. On aniline leather, a drop of water rubbed in an undamaged area will darken the leather. It is porous and therefore standard water based cleaning products can leave a stain. It needs to be treated with care - please refer to How to clean, care & protect Aniline leather.
The following instructions are for pigmented, matte top-coated leather (non-porous). Please contact a specialist if you have one of the other mentioned types.

The first thing to do is to protect your furniture with a pigmented leather protector cream and apply it every 3 to 6 months. It will ensure softness and prevent shrinkage and fading. We recommend that you insist in contact areas or add an additional leather protector on these zones (hand, head, and leg areas of the furniture). It will reduce the risk of friction damage and transfer of dye from clothes. It also has UV filters that will reduce the risk of cracks and tears and maintain softness.

In case of stains from soils and dirt, the leather should be treated with a Mild Leather Cleaner using a leather cleaning brush to gently remove impurities from the leather grain.

After some time, if your furniture shows some signs of fading, you can use a leather refresher or a leather toner with the appropriate color. Please degrease the damaged areas with a Leather Cleaning Spirit before applying the color.
If the damages on your furniture are more serious, please contact a professional or contact our experts.

‍Cleaning and protecting pull-up, waxed, and oiled leathers

‍These kinds of leather are usually porous and stains will be hard to remove by general cleaning. As a consequence, you need to protect your products with a waterproofing spray for leather & textile and wait for a few minutes. Then, you can apply an aniline leather protection cream for enhanced protection.

As for any other aniline leather, dust your leather regularly with a soft cloth or a feather duster and wipe it gently without rubbing with a slightly damp cloth. Patina will come faster but this is a desired effect of this type of leather.
In case of traces of wear and tear, polish your leather with a soft dry (or slightly humid) cloth. You can also use an Aniline Cream or Gloss-Cream.

When you feel your leather product starts to look scratched or faded, you may also have to revitalize it with some wax or oil for Pull-Up leather. It will restore the look and finish of your product and hide the scratching and discoloration. Don't forget to re-protect your leather afterwards.

For any serious damage, please contact a leather professional or ask Aury experts for advice.‍

‍Removing grease stains from contact zones

‍Aniline leather darkens over time especially in contact zone areas like headrests and armrests. Over time, this will create a very visible stain. General cleaning in these cases is insufficient. You should contact a professional who will improve the damaged area by absorbing the penetrated grease as well as refreshing and renewing the leather color.

If you want to reduce the damage yourself, here are few tips:
Put some Leather Cleaning Spirit on a clean soft cloth and wipe quickly over the darkened area without wetting it too much. Allow it to dry before re-applying. It will dissolve a bit of the penetrated grease. Then, apply a grease absorber spray and make sure the area dries completely. You will see a white/yellow powder as it pulls out the grease. You can then brush it off or vacuum it . Repeat the process until the powder stops turning yellow.

Over the years, these contact zones will change color. You can adjust that with a leather refresher product with an appropriate color tone.
Of course, the other zones of your leather product should be protected as per our other guidelines to keep the leather soft and avoid aging and sunlight damage.
